This personal memoir describes the fate of a Saxon family from Gro\u00dfau (Transylvania) during and after the Second World War. In impressive scenes, the author describes the arrival of the Russian troops, the hasty evacuation of the village, the loss of property, deportations to Russia, the struggle for daily survival and the arduous new beginning after the expropriation. <\/p>\n

The narrative ranges from the first encounter with the Cossacks to the dramatic escape and return to the destroyed village to the work on railroad lines and the famine of 1947, painting a moving picture of everyday life, the perseverance of the people and the difficult fate of the German minority in Romania. <\/p>\n
